The history of Future World Orchestra

“Future World Orchestra” is a studio project founded in 1981, by Gerto Heupink and me. On 16 October 1981 Desire became our first single release, and was enthusiastically received immediately in Hilversum a lot.

Many insiders could not believe that this music had been produced in the Netherlands. Gerto and I considered this to be a compliment.

In the week of 26 till 30 October 1981, Frits Spits (Holland’s most famous DJ), exclaimed “Desire” as “Steunplaat”, in the radio program: The evening rush-hour. As from that moment on everything came in a flow acceleration. In the same week we were invited by Veronica to appear in a Dutch television program: “Nederland Muziekland”. The cording for this event took place on 10 November 1981, in a bath in Scheveningen whereas the retransmission took place a day later.

On the first pressing (a 1000 copies) of Desire the group’s name has been unintentionally written as: Future's World Orchestra. A collector’s item therefore.

On 19 February 1982 the first LP of FWO appears: MISSION COMPLETED. On this album also our second single was to be found: “I'm not afraid or the future”, which also climbed the hit charts. With the success in the Netherlands interest came quit rapidly from the foreign countries. “Desire” was released almost entirely throughout Europe. Particularly in Italy and Spain, it became a hit. In an authoritative (dance) list in Rome, “Desire” even occupied an number 1 position.

Invitations followed rapidly from both countries, where during the period of 1983 and 1984 a number of TV-gigs has been done together with a lot of interviews for radio and writing press. In 1983, Gerto and I have founded our own new studio in Zwolle, were preparations were made for our second album, which would be released later on.

The recordings for this album suddenly came in a flow acceleration, because we proposed a demo recording with our interpretation of the title music of the film E.T.

Given the arriving success of the film we had to rush to record the final version in the Dureco studio. 14 Days after taking the demo, the eventual single already was available in the record shops. As producer we have asked Bert Ruiter (ex focus), because we wanted a more power if you like added to our songs. Bert, is a fantastic producer and a very sympathetic man as us concerned, who contributed in an important way to “Turning Point”, as the 2e album was called.

E.T. for us became the third hit single on a row, and even outdistanced the original score of John Williams in the charts. In the summer of 1984 “Roulette” was released, also an instrumental tune. The track was chosen as fixed tune of “Radio 2” transmissions of the Tour the France event that year. Because of this “Roulette” also became a hit. In November 1983 it eventually came up to that point that we did our first live-gig, in “Jumbo”, a discotheque in Oldenzaal. For the show we had preparations made during the summer months of 1983. The synthesizers have been put on special standards, specially developed for the show, which was partly rotatable. The stage was overstrained (not the members of the band that is) with a new phenomenon: “Line-light”. Fluorescent plastic wires in several colors.

Together with the futuristic looking drum kit, a Simmons by the way, this entourage gave everything a particularly futuristic sight. In 1985, Gerto and I decided to go our own way regarding our musical projects. I, myself, continued to work on new repertoire for FWO and recorded 2 singles: “S.O.S. –Here my Call and “Don't Go”, with singer Bert Vrielink who I knew from the music scene in Zwolle. In 1988, of both LP's a collection-CD of FWO was released. Because of this the music of FWO became heard more often on national air. Still the music of FWO is worldwide used regularly in radio- and television programs.

In the year 2000 the CD: “The Hidden Files” was released. The Cd consists of only instrumental tracks (synthesizer tracks if you like), all recorded in the late nineteen’s. Most favorite track (to me that is) is: “Running Water”. This track was noticed and picked up as a station call-tune, by a University Radio station in Washington DC. The album also got a lot of good reviews, even from Moskou if you believe.
